Have you ever experienced a person whose survival depends only by flattering others? There are several such specimens who will praise you, admire you, commend you and extol you no end. In ancient times there used to be slaves who were appointed with the sole purpose of singing in praise of their employers. In the palace of mighty kings also there was no dearth of such persons who used to applaud His Majesty to unbelievable heights . According to Wikipedia"Flattery is the act of giving excessive compliments, generally for the purpose of ingratiating oneself with the subject.

In offices and at a work place this breed is found in plenty. Their only job is to shower their boss with compliments, to seek his approval. They will not perform or they are incapable fellows who win the favour of their seniors by simply speaking words of adulation. Once their real face is exposed, they seek change of seat or a transfer to another Department. I can recollect several such flatterers using different modes of indulging in their favourite pastime. When their mask is exposed, they will never show you their face again. One such example I quote here. The person concerned was the Secretary of the Teachers' Union His name was S.I had reports that S never taught a class. He used to daily come to my office and speak words coated with layers and layers of sugar. I was looking for an opportunity to expose him. The opportunity came sooner than expected. In one complaint, I transferred a teacher. Mr. S came to me praising me that I took a correct decision to transfer the teacher. Next day I was shocked when Mr. S came to my office, leading a delegation, that the teacher was victimised and transfer order must be withdrawn. I looked at Mr.S but he evaded looking at me. I laid bare his truth in front of all the delegates. In front of everybody he was condemning me and in private he was flattering me. I never saw that man again as he was confined to his school and took his regular classes.
Many flatterers use their weapon to hide their drawbacks. They flatter any one whom they come across An insincere flatterer has no scruples. Initially you cannot judge him,but as you come to know him closely ,you realise his notorious habit. There is another form of flattery which is harmless.A bride dressed for her marriage, gets many flattering comments. These are harmless. Generally people like to hear praises about themselves.,so they enjoy

- Tis an old maxim in the schools,
- That flattery's the food of fools;
- Yet now and then your men of wit
- Will condescend to take a bit.

I have known people like this and they really disgust me. They should have self respect. It is one thing to commend someone with a genuine complement and quite another to shower so many that they become shallow and meaningless. My dad used to call people like this "Brown nosers". ♥
ReplyDeleteThank you Kathy. You are right.Such people have no self respect.
DeleteVery true Ushaji, a few generous compliments are fine but flattery at the drop of a hat can really get on your nerves. The best way to get flatterers off your back is to just call their bluff out openly.
ReplyDeleteThanks. Right Reshma. That's what I did.
DeleteGiven that I now work in the IT field where flattery doesn't count for much unless you are technically strong as well, I don't come across too many of these specimens nowadays. But then, there exist the 'yes men' which is also another form of flattery, these are the people who blindly agree with the boss in public and sing his praises in front of everybody, but secretly don't quite even understand what the boss was talking about.
ReplyDeleteThank you Vishal. Yes men also are another form of flatterers. Is'nt it?
DeletePeople who flatter gets flattened . don't they?
ReplyDeleteYes Anil, because they like to be flattered.
DeleteTrue,ma'am. There is this tribe who are called 'Chamchas" and this type of flattery is called chamchagiri. they expect favors in return. Amazed at the way Mr S took a total U-turn the very next day itself .
ReplyDeleteThanks Asha. We find several of this species in daily life.
Deletepaid flattery from professional flatterers. Nice write-up.
ReplyDeleteThanks Sarala.
DeleteI have seen these types Usha ji. They are really so irritating. Flattery in any form is just so disrespectful, to the person being Flattered.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely Jaibala. To top it all they are shameless.
DeleteSuch people like S are every where, Good if we find them and learn to avoid them. Nicely done Usha ji. You sorted him out!,
ReplyDeleteThanks Inderpreet. These people deserve to be exposed.
