“Those who cannot change their minds cannot change
anything.” Bernard Shaw
The above
quotation by Lord Bernard Shaw is a stark reality. Right from birth we
grow up with certain notions and
beliefs which we consider to be the ultimate. When life is not static
and change takes every moment, how can we keep our mind
closed. With an open mind we can experience
new ideas in our life. A closed mind
is like stagnant water
which is full of moss, and has no
utility. It is the need of the day that we change with changing perceptions. If
we stick to the same old ideas which people followed in ancient times then we will never progress. In fact,
if the head of the family is a person
who does not have an open mind, then his next generation has to pay the price
for it.
This is a real
story of a man, who refused to change with the passage of time. Hira Singh ,
resident of a small town was a widower. He had two daughters, Meenu and Sonu.
The sisters studied upto class x in the local school. This man was not at all
amenable to any new ideas. After successfully
completing class x ,the girls
wanted to get admission in class xi.
Being close minded he flatly refused . Sonu, the younger one, borrowed
money from a friend and took admission in class xi. She took up a few
tuitions, went to a big city, studied in
a college and became an advocate. She married a judge and led a comfortable life.It was her own
effort and open mindedness that she could achieve so much in life. On the other
side, due to the close minded nature of her father, her sister had to suffer. She was
married to a man, who died of heart
attack. leaving two small children. Hira
Singh was the most dejected person on
earth. It was his lack of open mindedness which ruined the life of his own daughter .

ReplyDeleteThanks Rachna. Yes very few people are open mminded people.
DeleteInteresting that you wrote about open-minded Usha as I wrote similarly on openness! Great minds think alike! ;) Your story is a great representation of what can happen with both an open and a closed mind! <3

DeleteChange is not bad at all. Sometimes it is very important, as in the case of Hira and his daughters.
ReplyDeleteIt's always wrong to have a myopic view and wear tinted glasses coz we never grow. I agree, we need to adapt and evolve.
