Write Tribe # 2 An unsent letter

This is a true incident which I experienced, while I was driving to my office. I was placed in a very  awkward situation, when I got help from a police constable whose whereabouts  were  not known. The letter of thanks of the unknown constable was never sent.
 Dear  Unknown Police Constable,
I am writing this letter to thank you for helping me out of the difficult  situation in which I was unwittingly  caught. Even though you did not know  whether I was at fault or not, you supported me.Perhaps you were moved  seeing a lady surrounded by so many  people, all shouting at the pitch of their voice and myself , on the verge of tears, sitting in the car at the steering wheel helplessly. You shooed away  all those people who were blaming me for no fault of mine. You got the way cleared for me and asked me to drive away. I looked at you thankfully wanting to tell you the whole incident but you  gestured that I should leave. I tried to look for you at the same crossing  for many days but never saw you.
I want you to know the details of the whole incident.I am a very cautious driver. You know that during morning and evening  the roads are  full of mad traffic. Everyone is in a hurry and overtake from  the wrong side. I was near the Tughlak Road crossing. The traffic signal was green. As soon as I neared, it turned red.I applied the brake and stopped. Behind my car a young man,was driving a motorbike  recklessly. He just banged into my car from behind. He got down and started shouting at me. I explained that I could not cross the red light. This man was in no mood to listen and continued to blame me. So many people collected there.Seeing a lady alone and helpless  they were watching the Tamasha. You came as a good Samaritan and dispersed the crowd. How much I thanked God that He sent you to rescue me.
God bless you.You are such a nice and kind human being.
    Yours faithfully
A lady in distress whom you helped

  1. Delhi is not a place to look around and ask for help. Just bunch of people can actually tear off a woman driver. I faced something like this in Moolchand Flyover in 2005. Usha, you brought those terrible images back...
Wish, you had posted this letter; the good Samaritan would have loved it :)
    Lovely post..

    1. Yes Panchali no body comes forward to help you in a crisis. When they see a women driver they only stand and and watch her dilemma. I would like to know your experience in Delhi.

  2. Oh! That's really bad. People don't obey traffic rules and as you said, everyone is in a hurry during rush hours.

    1. Yes Saru people always seem to be in a hurry. They jump red light causing great confusion and chaos in rush hours.

  3. Oh! It is the mob mentality that we see all around... without ascertaining the facts, it is so easy to blame and allegate others! Glad that you found a guardian angel at that time!

  8. Hi I am so happy u wrote bout cops. Not all cops are bad and I met few cops who shared their food with me during the monsoon in Mumbai. Few good souls but rare to find but we can find them. Perhaps, a small effort on our part and free of prejudices.

    1. Vishal the cops are generally looked down upon. You are right there are several cops who are courteous, polite and helpful. It is the mind set of the people to condemn them. There are good and bad people in every sphere of life.

  10. Not stopping the vehicles while the signal is in orange is one silly risk that many of our drivers take. I have experienced the pressure (from vehicles behind) that want to hurry through even after the signal turns red. These days, I put my hand out and tell people coming from behind that I intend to stop - they either need to stop or go around overtaking me from the sides. If people are in such a hurry, they need to take a re-look at their planning and time-management.

    1. You are correct Rajesh.People are in a hurry, especially young ones,to jump the red light. They dont bother whether they hit someone. If a lady is driving they become very bold and use very filthy language.

  12. I always dread the idea of being caught in such jamelas where we are never at fault, for they have no idea as to what exactly is the problem, for they feel just because we are in the car we must be the culprit. Not only do we have to bear their abuses but also shell out a lot for person who had caused such a thing to happen. Sometimes we do get policemen who know how to handle such mobs and help us but most of the times we end up doing what the mob demands.
I am sure that policeman must be a very decent person and still must be helping people, wherever he is.

    1. Rama you are correct. Even I am wary of such Jhamelas, but sometimes we inadvertently caught in such a situation for no fault on our part. The policeman came there as a Godsend.
