Festival of Words four # music

Who does not like music! I think there is no one who  can be indifferent to music. Music has the power to move animals and even flora and fauna.Without music, life will be dull and drab. Have you heard the music of nature? If you hear the early morning breeze, the twittering of birds, the  message of the  branches  of trees and the gay smiles of flowers dancing with joy, and above all your own humming  lines of soft music, your soul and your whole being will feel relaxed!
Music communicates many different types of messages through the combination of sound and instruments.Soft music ,in any language  is soothing.Music has a positive effect on the mind of a listener. Even a new born baby is influenced by music. The mother sings a lullaby, which the baby does not understand, but the soft  tune and rhythm makes a crying baby quiet and drift into sleep.
I am not going into the details of classical music, either Hindustani or Carnatic. i am mainly dwelling on popular music, which is not necessarily film music, but music which appeals to the mind.It is an accepted fact the success of many films depends on the quality of songs, their lyrics and background music.Film songs appeal to the young and old alike. Songs of Hindi cinema have gained popularity in other countries also. Raj Kapoor's  songs like 'Aawara hoon' and 'Mera joota hai japani' became very popular in Russia.  Even before Aawara was released there was a song,' mere pia gaye rangoon, kiya hai vahan se telepone, tumhari yad satati hai' , appealed to the people of Burma.
Hindi film songs are of a genre of folk music, pop, and classical music. There are several talented music directors, lyric writers and singers who  have helped film music to attain a glorious place in the world of music. Starting from Pankaj Mullick, K.C Dey and K.L. Saigal.and  female singers Khurshid, Noorjahan,Surraiya and Amirbai Karnatki  made Hindi film music popular. The private songs of  Pankaj Mullick ,Talat Mahmood' and Jagmohan  were the hit  songs those days.
Songs of  the years 60s,and 70s  are still sought  after, This was the golden era of Hindi film  music. Songs of Mohd. Rafi,  Kishore Kumar,Hemant Kumar and Manna Dey were great hits.Among the female singers  Asha Bhonsle, Geeta Dutt, Lata Mangeskar had a great mass appeal and  are appreciated even now. I love to hear  old songs. They are a very nice blend of lyrics and good direction.
The present film music is loud. It is based on pop music. We can hear English words also mingled in  fusion songs.A.R Rehman is the king of pop music. Recently he was awarded the National Award by the Government of India.

Instrumental music also has an important role. To depict a particular emotion, many times no dialogue is used.Instead an instrumental music is played. The audience can decipher  the emotion which the producer intends to depict. I am uploading a video of an instrumental music. It is really soothing.

  8. i totally agree.. I guess its a sign that Im getting too old but i dont find any of todays songs worthy... none of them will last a year in your minds, let alone decades.
Good songs come from the heart... they can be sung without having rappers in the background and synthesized voices to cover up a lack of tune!
