A broken heart

Ramesh was the only son of Girdhari Lal, who was a Headmaster of a Middle school in his village,Sohan Pur. Girdhari Lal had high  hopes for his son. He wanted him to became an IAS and get a posting as a Collector in the same District. He admitted his son in a reputed school in Lucknow. Ramesh was an average student. In the Sr. Sec. Exam, he manged to get 84% marks. He joined college and also started preparing for IAS.
He got fairly good marks in BA. IAS exam was scheduled to be held in October. There were four months  left, so he went home. There was a proposal of marriage  for him. He told his father he would get married only as an IAS Officer. His father insisted that he see the the girl and the marriage can be conducted later on. On the weekend, father and son went to see the girl. She was a sweet looking girl. She had studied up to High School. She was working with an NGO. Ramesh was very head strong. He showed his anger to his father,"You want me to marry this girl! Soon I will be an IAS. Does she know how to move in high society?" He left the girl's house, without a word. He went home, collected his suitcase and left the house. He just left a chit for his father, stating that he would never come back to that village...........................................................................
Ten years passed.Ramesh was now thirty six years old. He could not clear IAS and was working as a Clerk in a Municipal Office in Lucknow. He was staying in  one room, let out by a needy man. On his death bed,the old man requested Ramesh to marry his daughter and to look after his wife,as his own mother.Sometimes Ramesh used to remember how he had insulted an innocent girl. Perhaps it was her curse that he had to face so much misery. He had two daughters and his wife was again pregnant. She had to take up a job in a women's organisation, where they prepared pickles and sold them in the market.
His office life was also very miserable. The boss was always annoyed with him.One day a new lady Collector joined the office. The whole staff was very happy. It was rumoured that she was very soft spoken and was very kind hearted. The day she joined, she held a meeting to meet the staff. Ramesh was stunned to see her. She was the same girl, whom he had rejected. She saw him and felt embarrassed, but controlled her self. She became very popular with the staff.Every body spoke highly about 'Ma'am'. Ramesh never had any occasion to be with her face to face.  Sometime if he happened to see her in the corridor,, he would politely wish her.
One day after he came back from office, his wife was not at home.Ramesh wondered how she was late that day.  He heard a car stopped outside his house. He told his daughter,"Get me my shirt. Go and see  to whose house the car had come.". The daughter opened the door and came running,"Mamma has come with another lady." The lady, who was holding his wife's hand, to give her support, entered inside. For a second, she was  about to return, but came inside. It goes without saying that the lady was his boss. She addressed him," Don't you feel ashamed to allow your wife to work in such a condition? She is so weak and pregnant." She left without  listening to what he had to say.
Next day, when Ramesh came home, the first thing his wife told him,"That lady had come in the morning. She told me her pitiable story that how a proud man refused to marry her. She determined and became an IAS Officer. She never got married, because she loved him at first sight. She has taken promise from me that the baby, I am carrying, she will like to adopt." Ramesh bent his head, with a tear in his eyes and a blessing for the kind lady. Next day when he reached office people were all discussing that Madam had sought transfer from the office.

This a fictional story.
