A witty Mahatma

When Gandhi ji was studying Law in London, there was a senior Professor , whose last name was Peters. He did not like Gandhi ji at all. He could not tolerate his presence.

One day during lunch hour, Gandhi ji brought his plate and came and sat  next to the Professor.

The Professor said ,' Mr. Gandhi, you do not understand that a bird and a pig do not sit together  to eat."

Gandhi  looked at him as a parent would look at his rude child and calmly replied," You  do not worry  professor, I will fly away," and he went and sat at another table.

Mr. Peters, reddened with rage decided to take revenge. Next day , in the class he put a question to Mr Gandhi," If you find  two bags on a road, one filled with money and the other wisdom, which one will you pick up?"

Mr. Gandhi replied,"I will pick up the bag  containing money."

Mr. Peters sarcastically said,"In your place, I would have picked up wisdom."

Mr. Gandhi shrugged and responded,"Each one takes, what he does'nt have."

Mr. Peters murmured  something and left.

After a few days the result of the exam was declared. Mr. Peters was raging with anger. He wrote the word idiot' on Mr.Gandhi's exam sheet.Mr. Gandhi took the sheet and went back to his seat. He was thinking how to come out of this rigmarole.

He got up from his seat and went to the Professor and told him politely in a very dignified  tone,"Mr. Peters , you have signed the examination sheet but you forgot to give me the marks."

Hey, hey, hey.

  7. Interesting and witty. But I wonder if Gandhi at that young age and a raw candidate in England among magisterial Englishmen would have had the gumption let alone the wit to counter such curt comments.
Was it Chesterton or was it Bernard Shaw who said when his way was blocked by roguish young men on a pavement that they do not move and make way for dogs , that he stepped down from the pavement and said, "but I do"?
