growing old gracefully UBG Day 2

Old age is a curse if the off springs don't care for their parents..The children do not realise that once the old parents were young. They  loved their children, nurtured them with care, spent sleepless nights  when the they were unwell. The same children  feel that the parents are a burden on them. I read  a story recently which narrated the sufferings  of an old woman. She was  a multi millionaire in her younger days.  She commanded great respect in society. Her children literally worshiped her. When she became old and infirm, she transferred all her property  in the name of her three children. After the property was  donated, the attitude of the children completely changed. They sent her to an old age  home. None of the children ever visited her.On her death bed she summoned her sons and told them to donate ceiling fans or coolers to the old age home. The youngest son questioned why she wanted a fan or a cooler, when she had already lived there for five years. The old lady replied,"When your children send you here, you will live in comfort". These were her last words How sad!!
I know a true heart rending incident. Sonu(name changed) was a gazzeted officer. She had only one son. Her husband was a reknowned scientist. After  he died, her son forced her to transfer her  huge house in his name. On getting possession of the house ,he pushed her out. She had nowhere to go.  She was seen begging on a crowded crossing. Many of her subordinates and colleagues offered to help her, but she did not agree. Last winter she was found dead on the road. What a tragedy!!
We are fortunate to have kids who are so loving and caring. I thank God for peace of mind that we have got in our old age.

  1. I'm glad you have such an understanding, caring family Ushaji, as you are well aware, it's a luxury these days. But you know most importantly, children are the reflection of what they parents show them. You can safely believe you've done a pretty good job :)

  3. Basically I am seeing children finding their own reasons to disown parents. My mother took care of her parents and inlaws till they died, she played a role model for me to take care of my parents and in laws.My son is observing me now! Values inculcated once will stay for ever.

    1. Padmaja, you are very true. Children act as they see their parents treating their own parents.

  4. Sadly, this is the harsh reality that many parents have to face today. Some children do not even bother to leave them at old age homes, but simply abandon in public places like bus and railway stations. A very moving piece of writing, ma'am.

  5. Very true ma'am. There are children who abandon their parents and yet there are some children who live with parents only to treat them as baby sitters while they are at work. So, many old parents prefer to live alone today in retirement homes.
You are indeed lucky to have children who care for you. Stay blessed!

    1. Yes Asha, it is better to live in Old Age homes than staying with children who insult them and treat them like menials.

  6. Yes, Ushaji. It is indeed a curse when children don't care for their parents. In today's generation children are quick enough to dump their parents. You are blessed to have such wonderful children.

  7. You are blessed to have children who care about you and look after you. I am glad that I had the pleasure to look after my parents. My father lived with me until he died, my mother still lives with me. Nice post Usha.

  8. There is a growing trend of children leaving their parents in old age homes, and this has such devastating effects on the emotions of the abandoned parents. And throwing them out after getting the property and money in their hands... how can they sleep peacefully at night? What example are they setting for their own children. Terrible state of affairs!

    1. Yes Shilpa. These days children have become very intolerant towards their parents. The grand children are usually fond of grand parents. They will mete out the same treatment towards their parents.

    1. Yes Bhuvanesh, it is very unfortunate. The children don't realise that their children are watching them minutely and will do the same that they are doing for their parents.

  10. Very true,Ma'am.Old age is a burden, no luggage for at least a few of the offspring. As the technology widens the world, the human heart narrows itself to a small shell of ingratitude.

  11. There are so many such cases happening around us. This birthday I celebrated it at an old age cum orphanage home, and it was indeed disheartening to see so many oldies from affluent families dumped there by their kids after taking over their wealth. It is indeed a sad state of affairs. You're are indeed blessed to have such loving kids.

    1. Swathi, you are too young.and you have not seen how money and property make people so selfish. They don't even care for the parents.

  14. No wonder, many old parents do not transfer the property until the last minute. But if a parent is "taken care" only for his/her property, you can very well imagine what her situation is like. It's shocking to know the stories narrated by you in your post.
