Hindi film music.UBC Day 20

Hindi films   are popular because of songs. Songs are an integral part of Hindi movies. In the past movies used to have thirty to forty  songs. There was no playback music. In the early days, the instruments  were visible in front of the screen. The actors  used to sing themselves. One of the oldest stars, who sang ih films, was K.C.Dey. The song ' duniya rang rangeeli baba',was very  popular. The stars who sang their own songs were Ashok Kumar, Pankaj Mullick, K.L. Saigal, Devika Rani, Noor Jahan, and Surraiya, who  were very popular.
During the freedom struggle patriotic songs were liked. I remember the song,'Dur hato aye duniya walo , Hindustan hamara hai', which became a hit.  Noor Jahan and Surraiya sang romantic songs. Noor Jahan's songs for 'Anmol Ghadi' were super hits. Here is a song from the movie

The songs sung by Surriaya  were also on every ones lips. Many of her songs were light ones. Here is a sample  from Pyar ki jeet.

Among male singers K. L. Saigal is considered to be the pioneer. He was a very popular those days. The songs,' ae katibe taqdeer ', from the movie My Sister was a hit. Old timers still remember the songs sung him.

The arrival of Lata Mangeshkar, Mukesh  and Mohd. Rafi changed the history of film music. Lata Mangeshkar's song in the film Mahal was  so haunting that it cast a spell on the audience. Till today the song attracts  people. Here is the song.

The period of 50's to 70's was the golden period of hindi film music. During this period Asha Bhonsle, Manna Day Geeta Dutt, Kishore Kumar and many other singers entered the world of Hindi music, A  song  sung by Geeta Dutt is presented here
After  the 80's hindi  film music was very much inspired by western music.

  1. I listened to the last song, simple song with simple music and good voice! I wish the recording was better, but then realized it was taken in the 50s! I love old movies, but new songs :)
